California crash claims 3 lives, injures 5

Three individuals were killed in a California car wreck. In addition, five individuals have suffered injuries in the crash. The crash involved six cars and occurred on Highway 101 in Sunnyvale.

How the crash happened

The time of the crash was reported to be just shy of 12:30 a.m. The California Highway Patrol said a pickup truck driver was going north along the highway but suddenly lost control of the vehicle. The pickup struck the median wall.

Four other vehicles then collided with the pickup. Three of the drivers involved in the chain-reaction crash then got out of their cars. Another car apparently struck these three individuals, catapulting two of them over the center wall and into southbound traffic. Police said five other individuals were transported to local medical centers with injuries.

Legal recourse available following the crash

It seems apparent that the pickup truck driver likely caused the accident due to negligent driving, though the crash is still under investigation. In this situation, the family members of the deceased individuals who were not driving the pickup at the time of the accident may choose to file wrongful death claims. Likewise, the injured parties may file personal injury claims, seeking the reimbursement of financial damages sustained due to the crash. The claims may be filed against the truck driver if he or she survived the crash and perhaps other drivers, depending upon what the evidence reveals; if the truck driver did not survive, claims may be filed against the truck driver’s estate or anyone else with an ownership interest in the pickup truck. Successfully fought claims may result in damage awards to cover losses stemming from the crash, such as hospital bills and funeral expenses.
