How to avoid fatigued driving

Driving while fatigued can be as hazardous as driving while drunk. Therefore, California motorists should understand what they can do to avoid operating a motor vehicle while tired. Ideally, an individual will get at least seven hours of rest prior to getting behind the wheel. Those who are still tired despite getting enough sleep should see their doctor. It is possible that they have a sleep disorder that may result in falling asleep while driving.

Taking medication could make a person more vulnerable to becoming tired or falling asleep during the day. Therefore, it may be a good idea to ask about trying a new medication or changing the time of day when the medication is taken. This could help to prevent a person from being too drowsy to safely operate a car or truck.

Taking breaks every two hours is also a good idea while on a long road trip. This is because a person can become tired or be lulled to sleep after too much time behind the wheel. If possible, bring a companion who can take over behind the wheel if necessary. Alternatively, a companion can help to keep a driver alert by engaging in conversation. If driving alone, don’t hesitate to take naps of 15 to 20 minutes if signs of fatigue appear.

A motor vehicle accident caused by a drowsy driver could result in multiple injuries or deaths. With help from a lawyer, a crash victim may obtain compensation for missed wages, lost future earnings or medical expenses. Evidence of drowsy driving might include an admission of guilt from a driver or the presence of prescription medication in a negligent driver’s vehicle. If necessary, expert witnesses may testify at a trial or offer their analysis during mediation sessions or other settlement negotiation proceedings.
