Teenagers in California and elsewhere sometimes abuse their driving privileges by driving too fast or recklessly. Operating a motor vehicle is a major responsibility, but some drivers may overestimate their ability to handle their cars in certain situations. Speeding leads to many car accidents each year and claims the lives of thousands throughout the country. Sadly, two teenagers lost their lives in an accident that was most likely caused by speeding.

Accident details

Around 10 p.m. on July 22, officers with the California Highway Patrol responded to an accident on SR 193 in Placer County. At the scene, they discovered a white Mini Cooper that had struck a tree and caught on fire. No other vehicles were involved in the wreck.

In the car were the driver, an 18-year-old male, and a 16-year-old passenger. Both teens were declared dead at the scene, but authorities did not release their identity. Officials believe speed played a role in causing the crash, and that presumably caused the teen driver to lose control and strike the tree.

Wrongful death

As they deal with their tragic loss, the surviving family of the 16-year-old may pursue a wrongful death claim against the estate of the driver, as well as anyone else who had an ownership interest in the vehicle. Awards from a successfully navigated claim will help cover their funeral costs and other financial losses related to the accident. In order to gain a full understanding of their rights and options, they will want to work with an experienced personal injury attorney in California for assistance.
